Ecotonal Assemblies is an artistic research project that investigates ecotones – zones of transition between ecological systems – as models for rethinking the design and care of built and unbuilt environments. The project draws from the ecological concept of the ecotone, where biological diversity intensifies and systems overlap, to question how spatial boundaries are drawn, maintained, or transformed in architecture and urban space. Through artistic methods such as cartographic fieldwork, textile installation, speculative storytelling, and environmental forensics, the project explores how thresholds between materials, climates, species, and disciplines can become zones of negotiation, encounter, and shared responsibility. The ecotone becomes both concept and method: a way to render visible what often remains overlooked – gradients, tensions, contaminations, and collaborations. In this context, architectural boundaries as walls, windows and fences are not treated as neutral lines, but as dynamic, inhabited interfaces that ask for alternative forms of aesthetic, ecological, and political attention. Operating across five conceptual territories – Defining, Detecting, Conflicting, Aestheticising, and Fabulating – the project assembles theoretical profiles, spatial experiments, and multimedia installations. From window to a wetland or different hedges, Ecotonal Assemblies stages these spaces not as limits, but as sites of possibility and imagination.
